Hello and welcome to the first week of August. School will be starting back up soon and for a lot of people that means getting the home organized for the start of a new school year. It’s also a great time to redecorate your children’s rooms and home work spaces. It can something as simple as a small refresh of details like switch plates, drawer knobs and coat hooks to a total redo of everything. It’s up to you and your child.
This week our featured website is the site for the magazine House Trends – Your Destination for Inspiration. This magazine is based here in Dayton Ohio and also has issues printed for Cincinnati, Columbus, Pittsburgh & Tampa Bay. The website and print version both feature a plethora of design and remodeling tips and ideas for every area in your home. Now on to this week’s special: This week has been the start of 15%

Well, we are now into the third week of June and Summer is in full swing. Things are almost with my home project, the concrete is done, new deck built, columns, installed, new door, new shutters and the upstairs railing is almost finished. Just one more day of work and it will be fully transformed.

Overall I’m very happy with the new look, I think it’s a lot cleaner and more modern. We were almost too late to notice that one of the pillars would have been right in front of our picture window. It hadn’t mattered before since the pillars were wrought iron and more like screens. |
This week our featured website is Grace – A Place of Restoration. Grace is an antiques / interior design store in Missouri which sells architectural salvage, antiques and home decor, they also mention coffee and dessert in their logo which makes it even better. The whole store and overall theme is relaxed beauty. Housed in a former church built in 1854 “Grace” exudes style and well grace. Just seeing this site makes me want to take a trip to Rocheport, MO so I can visit the store in person. I think I see a road trip in my future. Know of a website we should feature on this blog? Hello and welcome to the the second week of May. It’s hard to believe that May is already half over, I swear we just had frost last week. Wait we did have frost last week, that’s Ohio for you. This weekend there are been two events here in Dayton, which make the city come alive with a vibrant night life. The big one is called Urban Nights and it’s a time when businesses throughout downtown stay open late (10 PM) and feature art, sculpture, film and music from locals. The streets are packed and you get to experience a plethora of amazing art, it’s a shame it isn’t like this every weekend. The other event is called A World A’Fair where groups representing about 50 countries set up in our convention center and showcase food, culture and dance from their native country.
Now on to this week’s specials: This month we are still featuring 35% off all Mercury Mosaics ceramic switch plates. If you like great design then this is also a great place to look, with ideas both old and new meant to inspire. Basically this site espouses 10 principles based on the Prairie School and Modernism movements along with lessons from today: Consider the Cost, Form is Function, Less Becomes More, Useful and Beautiful, Informal Meets Elegant, Integrate and Unify, Bring the Outside in, Think Natural, Go Green and Uniquely You. I’ve been reading through this site for quite some time and still keep finding myself amazed. |

Hello and welcome to our latest post for April, many of the flowers are blooming as well as allergies. Licensed artwork featuring Vincent Van Gogh’s famous painting Starry Night. The work was created in 1889 while he was in the asylum at Saint-Remy, in fulfillment of a previously expressed wish to paint a night sky from memory. He wrote that he wanted it to be “a kind of painting giving greater consolation.”

Hello and welcome to the second week of March. We have been getting rain all week and it has finally dissolved all of the remaining snow. I am really looking forward to cleaning up our yard and getting things ready for the Spring blooms. We put in some new gardens a few years ago and have been updating them ever since. I always love Spring and the new opportunities it presents.
Since I’m thinking about outdoors this is a great time to feature a local landscaping business, Topos Studio in Washington Township, Ohio. They take on projects through our local area ranging from civic, commercial, recreation and personal gardens. They have a very straightforward site and quite a few sketches of their designs available so you can see their style. I do wish they had more photos of the completed projects, but you can’t get everything. I really do like their style though and plan on going to a few of the places they have designed to check them out in person.

Hello and welcome to the first week of March. With today’s weather it definitely feels like Spring is on it’s way. I’m starting to categorize all of the projects around our house and the new warehouse space.
One thing we’re trying this year is to look at one room each week and see what little changes and minor fixes we can make to it without spending too much money. We started with the master bathroom and have been taking care of all those nagging little problems that just keep getting put off. We’ve also started changing small bits of decor, like the heat vent, that just didn’t match the rest of the room. (We had a white heat vent while all of the other hardware in the room is wrought iron.) The little bits of change have cost us under $100, but the difference has been amazing. We’re going to try and carry this on through the whole house taking on one room over the course of one to two weeks. Next week I’ll get some before and after shots.
This week we are featuring one of my favorite online furniture stores, Art Van Furniture from Michigan. They are a chain, but only have stores in one state so I just look at them online. One of the most useful features of their site is their Room Planner. You can use this tool to draw a custom sized room and then use their icons to see how you’d like to lay things out. You can even save and print your rooms. It’s a great idea planner and is helpful even if you aren’t in the market for new furniture.

Hi and welcome to the end of February. The past few weeks have been really big for us. We just moved into our new place at the Front Street Arts Complex and have been getting everything arranged. We have over twice as much space now and are surrounded by artists of all types: potters, sculpters, wood workers, painters, photographers, printers, etc. We’re really looking forward to being a part of this community.
This week we feature a great blog Apartment Therapy with the apt subtitle – “Saving the World, One Room at a Time”. My favorite feature is the home tours section where homeowners send in pictures and a walk through of their home and then receive comments and suggestions from other readers. A fun community and a great place to pick up ideas regardless of your style. Beware you can easly blow through a few hours on this site before you realize it.

Hello and welcome to the last posting of January. Winter and all of the cold is now upon us and it’s a great time to stay inside. This week I have a site to share from a home remodeler in Minneapolis who specializes in basements 
and bath remodeling: Jeffrey Grosscup. The site itself primary lets the designs speak for themselves. With great photography of the wide open and well lit rooms it’s hard not to feel inspired by his designs. There are some great before and after shots of some projects which show just how dramatic the changes have been.

This week is Christmas for those of you who celebrate the Holiday. Hopefully you are able to spend some time with your family and friends this week. This morning we just had our first snow of the year and everything is covered with a nice clean layer of white. I always love the look of a fresh layer of snow. There’s not enough to go sledding, but maybe later this week.
